Mezzanine and Vertical Lift

Mezzanines and Storage Platforms

Industrial steel work platforms (mezzanines) are your best solution to fully utilize existing overhead space so you can operate more efficiently and profitably, within the same footprint. You can gain valuable working, office, storage, or manufacturing areas at a fraction of the cost of new construction, and often with a significant tax depreciation advantage. Thousands of mezzanines, both custom and standard, are being used today in warehouses, government and military facilities, industrial plants and retail stores.

Raymond Handling Concepts can help you put the overhead space to work fast, with minimal interruption to your working floor area. A site visit, and a discussion of how the space is intended to be utilized, will determine what type of storage platform would work best for the application: standard, clear span, rack (or shelving) supported, or a multi-tier system.

Standard Mezzanine

A standard mezzanine is a structure that has heavy duty steel support columns along the perimeter of the platform, as well as support columns underneath the deck. These columns are tied together with steel joists and beams, whether cold rolled or structural, and are bolted together with high strength steel bolts to align the framing for uniform installation. These integrated components lock the connection into a solid unit for maximum strength. A deck is then attached to the top of the framing system, creating a surface for the storage platform. Some of the decking options available:

  • Roof deck and resin board, with variations of different types of surfaces
  • Steel bar grating
  • Diamond plate steel deck

Handrail and stairs for these structures are designed based on local building codes. Using the local building code as a guideline, those codes can determine placement of the stairs, if the stairs need open or closed risers, and if the handrail for the stairs meet those guidelines, as well. The same rules apply to handrail – spacing between rails can be anywhere between 4” to 12”.

Clear Span Mezzanine

This type of storage platform is similar to a standard mezzanine, with the exception of support columns in the interior of the mezzanine – columns are only located on the perimeter structure. This allows for unobstructed storage, as well as free flowing workspace, underneath the storage platform. The framework is designed to allow for unsupported loads across the span between the perimeter columns. Typically, these types of mezzanines have a higher elevation profile (due to the framework having a higher profile), so clear height of the area will have to be considered.

Rack Supported Mezzanine

A rack (or shelving) supported mezzanine is just that – a storage deck placed on top of an array of rack or shelving, or combination thereof. It is utilized in applications where items are stored below the deck on shelves, while the mezzanine level provides open space for bulk storage or workspace. The open space can even be utilized for additional shelving, configured differently than the storage system below the deck.

Multi-Tier Storage System

A multi-tier storage system can be many variations of what we have described above, but is not necessarily limited to one level.
One example is that we can provide a shelving system that is 17 feet tall, with a deck level (or what would also be referred to as a catwalk level) at 10 feet. This allows individuals to pick or store materials on the floor level, or catwalk level. You have the ability to increase the height and add additional storage, all within the same footprint. This benefits large distribution companies as they utilize these multi-tier storage systems. Especially with the integration of conveyor designed specifically for their application for storing, picking, shipping large volumes of items. When considering a storage platform for your facility, we highly recommend consulting with a professional who understands the current building and fire codes, as well as seismic engineering in your area. All of these play a role in the design of a storage platform that works best for your businesses‘ application.

Maintenance Platform

Maintenance platforms are used when service is due on a particular machine. This allows you to mechanically rise up and reach places otherwise unavailable.

Modular Office

We offer a diverse selection of wall types and framing options from PortaFab in order to ensure the highest quality building for your particular demand.
These modular wall systems feature steel framing for structural integrity and a truly non-progressive design that includes steel floor tracks and hidden fasteners that hide any trace of building modification, relocation or expansion.Compared to the competition, the level of structural integrity and modular flexibility received is unmatched in the industry.

Vertical Reciprocating Conveyor (VRC)

Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors (VRCs) are a cost-effective, safe, and easy way to move materials from one elevation to another. They are ideally suited for the safe and efficient movement of materials to a mezzanine, rack storage system with catwalks, or any new or existing upper floor level.

VRCs are safer than using a forklift truck, and are more efficient than manpower to move materials between levels. They are easier and less costly to operate and maintain, than elevators or forklift trucks. VRCs are classified as a material conveyor, and operators do not require OSHA forklift training.

Whatever the load may be, moving materials between levels utilizing a VRC is much more efficient. They can safely transfer pallet loads, as well as carts and boxes that many not fit on a forklift. In most cases, a VRC is ready to go; with a forklift, it may not be available, so efficiency is decreased.

There are different types of VRC’s available: a hydraulic VRC, most commonly used for movement at a rate of 6-8 times per hour, or the faster, continuous operation of a mechanical unit; there are VRC’s that are designed specifically for moving tote boxes and small cartons between deck levels, like a dumbwaiter. VRCs can be configured to meet your specific load, height, and speed requirements.
